Adaptive Skills Training (AST) is a hands-on approach that focuses on teaching practical life skills in real-world environments. It goes beyond theory, giving individuals opportunities to practice and grow through direct experience.
AST works by breaking everyday tasks into clear, manageable steps and teaching them through guided practice. Staff provide support, feedback, and repetition until each skill becomes natural and builds confidence.
AST helps individuals gain independence, strengthen daily routines, and improve problem-solving in real-life situations. By reinforcing new habits and offering ongoing opportunities for growth, AST empowers people at every stage of life.
Personal hygiene, visual and task scheduling and facilitating self care habits.
Household management, instructional cooking, meal prepping and creating a budget.
Expressing feelings through many facets for better understanding and connections.
Reshaping habits to help recognize social cues, social interactions and engaging
with peers.
Navigating surroundings, using public transportation, bus passes, riding bikes, understanding safety rules and traffic signs.
Evolving and reinforcing new habits allowing opportunities for all life's stages.

AST focuses on practical, everyday skills such as personal care, communication, social interaction, community navigation, and workplace readiness. The program is tailored to each individual’s needs, so the skills taught are directly relevant to their stage of life and goals.
Unlike classroom-based learning, AST takes place in real-world settings and uses hands-on practice. Skills are taught step by step with guidance and repetition until they become natural habits. This makes it easier for individuals to apply what they learn to daily life.
Yes — independence is one of the core goals of AST. By practicing skills in safe, supportive environments, individuals build confidence and gain the ability to manage more aspects of their own lives, while still having support when needed.
Every journey toward independence begins with small, meaningful steps. At Supportive Steps, we believe that with the right guidance, encouragement, and practice, individuals can build the skills they need to thrive in daily life.
Visual Motor Learning (VML) is a proprietary program by Supportive Steps that enhances and supplements Applied Skills Training (AST).
